The need for flood protection in Bray is reflected in the fact that Bray has had four major floods in the last century. The major floods occurred in 1905, 1931, 1965 and the last flood also known as Hurricane Charlie occurred in 1986. Two other less significant floods occurred in 1947 and 1958. Based on these events, flooding in Bray occurs approximately every 25 to 30 years.

The design and implementation of future flood protection for Bray is part of a process independent of Pizarro Developments Ltd under the control of a Flood Steering Committee set up in 2006 comprising Bray Town Council and the Office of Public Works (OPW).

This culminated in the lodgment of an EIS (environmental impact study) for a River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme with An Bord Pleanála in July 2007. This scheme which comprises a comprehensive series of Flood Protection measures for Bray and in particular those residences and lands along the riverside (including the Golf Club lands) was approved by An Bord Pleanála in 2008 and the detailed design is now the subject of a public appointment process from Bray Town Council and the OPW.
